The practical difference
ZIP is widely supported by operating systems and is usually the easiest choice for sharing files. RAR may achieve strong compression and supports features such as recovery records and multi-part archives, but recipients may need additional software to open it.
Choose ZIP for compatibility
Use ZIP for email attachments, website downloads, and mixed audiences. Windows, macOS, and most mobile platforms can open ordinary ZIP archives without installing a separate application.
Choose RAR for archive features
RAR can be helpful when splitting a large archive across volumes or when recovery features are important. Before sending one, confirm that the recipient can extract it and understands how multi-part files must be kept together.
Compression is not encryption
Putting files in an archive does not make them private. If you use password protection, choose modern encryption, send the password through a separate channel, and remember that filenames may still be visible depending on the archive settings.
