PDF Compression Explained: How to Reduce Size Safely
Learn what makes PDFs large and how image quality, fonts, and document structure affect compression results.
What makes a PDF large?
Scanned pages and high-resolution photographs are usually the biggest contributors to PDF size. Embedded fonts, duplicated resources, attachments, and unoptimized graphics can also add weight. A text-only PDF may already be compact and offer little room for reduction.
Lossless and lossy reduction
Lossless optimization removes redundancy without visibly changing content. Lossy compression downsamples or recompresses images, creating a smaller file at the cost of some detail. Documents intended only for screens can usually tolerate more image reduction than files intended for professional printing.

A reliable workflow
Start with moderate compression and compare the output at 100% zoom. Inspect signatures, fine print, barcodes, and image-heavy pages. If the file is still too large, reduce it in one additional pass from the original rather than repeatedly recompressing an already compressed copy.
Security considerations
A PDF can contain metadata, links, comments, forms, and attachments beyond the visible page. Compression does not automatically remove sensitive information. Redact confidential material with a purpose-built workflow and verify the saved document before sharing.
